The other day I was talking with an employee of a multi-billion-dollar healthcare company about how they get medical records from providers.  He explained that they first try FHIR, and if that doesn’t work then try to use several regional HIEs, and if that doesn’t work, they use Direct Protocol because everyone supports Direct Protocol.  I inquired; why don’t you start with Direct Protocol?  He replied, “I really don’t know”.
